Becoming a University Scholar
Applying to be a University Scholar
The University Scholars Program is a three-semester program, so students generally apply for admission in their first semester of their junior years. Students submitting applications must have at least three additional semesters remaining before their expected graduation dates. Occasionally students with many advance placement or ECE credit may apply in their sophomore years if they plan to graduate in three years. Pharmacy students may apply in their P-3 year.
Applications are generally due in November and students are notified of the outcomes of their applications in December. Deadlines for applications can be found on our deadlines page.
Students applying for the University Scholars Program should begin planning by the second semester of their sophomore years. At that time they should begin thinking about the general area of study they would like to pursue and the type of project they might undertake. They should begin speaking with faculty members who they might later ask to serve on their Advisory Committee. Students should also plan to attend the University Scholars Program informational meeting organized by the Honors Program each spring. At this meeting, students learn the time table for applications, strategies for obtaining faculty help and advice, and the components of an excellent proposal. Students should also review successful proposals from prior years.
Over the summer between sophomore and junior years, UConn students with at least a 3.6 total grade point average (at least a 3.5 TGPA for Honors Scholars) based on at least 54 credits at UConn (86 for Pharm.D. majors) receive invitations from the Honors Program for the University Scholar Program. Other students with strong academic records and an interest in participating in the program are also encouraged to apply.
